One of the most frequently performed physical tests conducted on in-place coating systems is tape/knife adhesion. Performing this test in strict conformance to the ASTM standard is critical for obtaining accurate adhesion ratings. ASTM D3359, “Measuring Adhesion By Tape Test” describes two methods: Method A (X-cut) is used for coatings in excess of 5 mils; and method B (Cross-cut) is used for coatings up to 5 mils thick. Method A requires making two cuts in the film each about 1.5 inches long that intersect near their middle with a smaller angle (between 30 and 45°) using a straightedge, cutting through the coating to the substrate in one steady motion. Using a straight edge or ruler to guide the knife blade can result in an injury. Replace the straightedge and achieve the correct angle at the intersection of the X using the KTA X-Cut Guide/Template.
